Margaret Thatcher muore ultraottantenne lasciando il Regno Unito e il mondo occidentale diviso tra cordoglio ufficiale e acerbo risentimento. Che cosa fece nel corso dei suoi oltre 10 anni da Primo Ministro conservatore l’ex “Signora di Ferro”?
Il suo liberalismo economico diede un duro colpo al socialismo e al sindacalismo del suo paese, riducendo alla disperazione intere comunità di minatori, ma senza scalfire sanità e social security. Nell’Irlanda del Nord, lasciò morire Bobby Sands che faceva lo sciopero della fame ad oltranza. Contribuì alla fine della Guerra Fredda, ma si oppose alla riunificazione delle due Germanie. Criticò l’Apartheid in Sud Africa e si augurò di portare la pace nel mondo, ma, potenziando gli armamenti, finì coll’ attaccare militarmente l’Argentina riconfermando il controllo delle Falklands/Malvinas.  La giovane Carlotta Perticari ricorda la donna.

Margaret_ThatcherMargaret Thatcher was born on the 13th of October 1925. She was the first female Prime Minister in the history of her country , where there is a long tradition of queens.
After a long illness, she  died at the age of 87, on the 8th of April 2013.

Margaret didn’t want a state funeral. However, Queen Elizabeth is going to attend the ceremony, which will be held in St.Paul’s Cathedral.

Mrs Thatcher had two nicknames: the first was, Maggie; the second “the Iron Lady”, which described her tough way of governing the United Kingdom.
Recently, the American actress Meryl Streep played Mrs Thatcher in a film with this title.
Margaret was loved by a large part of the British. At the same time she was also hated by the working  class and other people who believed that she defended the rights of the rich only.
Margaret Thatcher, the mother of two, was married to a man who supported her. Sometimes he cooked  for her.
